How To Develop An
Arpeggio Guitar Scale Idea

One thing we all seem to suffer from in our own little musical worlds is getting stuck in old habits of playing that don't take us anywhere or progress our playing to where it should be.

So how can we make our scales and arpeggios start to sound a bit more interesting?

VERSION 2
NOW AVAILABLE
A MINOR CHORD - E MINOR FORM

Lets just assume that you have chosen an A Minor chord from the key of C Major that you want to create some music with, Ive chosen the Amin-Emin Shape for this example.

A MINOR AEOLIAN SCALE - E MINOR FORM

The scale choice we are going to extract our arpeggios from would be the Aeolian mode.

A MIN AEOLIAN - ARPEGGIO - E MIN FORM

So now we have our arpeggio. Like most people, I use to use this arpeggio exclusively, running up and down from top to bottom until I was completely bored and then thought - Mmm, maybe I could try something else here? But what can we do to spice things up a bit?

You can use sequences of notes, vary your rhythms around. Learn vocal lines from your favourite singers or players and 'mold' them over the arpeggio into sequences. There is really no right or wrong way, you just need to exercise a little patience and experiment. That alone will work if you just spend the time.

But just to spice things up a little more, to give you a new perspective of your own, here is what I do. It is basically why Guitar Scales Version 2 is laid out the way it is.

We know that we are in the key of C Major, so what other arpeggios can we 'borrow' from our key center? I am going to use 2 other minor arpeggios from the key:

D MINOR DORIAN ARPEGGIO - D MINOR FORM

E MINOR 7 PHRYGIAN ARPEGGIO - C MIN FORM

Now look what happens when you start to mix and match the arpeggios in the same position.
A MIN - E MIN - D MIN - COMBINATION

Then look what happens if you start to connect them up to other 4 positions available, you can now start to go up and down the entire length of the fretboard! Believe me, it starts to get mind blowing when the endless ideas and possibilities start floading in. And remember this is all available over one little A minor chord!

MULTIPLE E MIN - D MIN - A MIN - COMBINATIONS

Yeah, that should keep you busy!
